  • Competitor Entry fee is inclusive of door entry and entitles competitors to compete in all eligible events on the day

  • Age category entry fee is inclusive of Novelty event Adult/Junior only.

  • Jack & Jill requires a separate entry fee on the day of competition.

  • Additional entries for competitors in Novelty events ONLY will be accepted on the day of competition.

  • Competitors who enter the novelty events ONLY on the day of competion, and are not enrolled in any other event, will be required to pay a separate competitor entry fee for these events on the day.

  • Novice competitors must have been dancing less than 12 months and are eligible to compete in novice events & their age category in any other eligible event.

  • Fees are non-refundable

 
Competitors

Enty Fees are dependant on the age/category competitors wish to compete in:

 

Junior        $15 (under 18)

Adult         $20 (18 - 44yrs)

Senior       $20 (45yrs+)


Novice       $15 (must be dancing less than 12 months in all styles)

 

Novelty     $5 (on the day if not already registered to compete in other events)

 

 

Competitors may only enter one (1) lifts and one (1) no lifts sections of their age category, plus any of the following dance events:

 

Girl/Girl, Boy/Boy, Triples, Traditional

 

Spectators

Spectator tickets will be available at the door only. No table bookings or pre-sales available this year.

KKBDC Entry Limits
Entry Limits

Competitors may only enter one (1) "Lift" and one (1) "No Lifts" event for their age category, plus any of the following dance events:.

 

All Competitors may enter any of the Open Age dance events in addition to their Age Category:

 

  • Girl/Girl

  • Boy/Boy

  • Triples

  • Adult/Junior

  • Traditional

 

Please note

All events will run regardless of the number of competitors. Organisers have the right to combine and cancel events as they see fit subject to entries. If time is limited some events may be cut down to 1 song.

KKBDC Judging
Judges and Judging Criteria
Judges

Judges for this competition will be from both Australia & New Zealand.

 

Judging sheets will be made available to competitors via email, on request, at a later date.

 

 

 

Judging Criteria

The organisers of this competition recognise that there are many styles of ROCK ‘N’ ROLL, SWING, LINDY HOP and ROCKABILLY danced throughout the world, and because of this ALL styles will be judged on merit of performance by the judges to the best of their ability.

 

  • Entrants will be judged equally on Timing, Harmony and Variety
     

  • The judge’s decision will be final. Judges are not to be approached immediately prior to or during an event. Judges are not to be asked any questions concerning the events throughout the entirety of the competition. All queries should be directed to the Floor Manager, located in the Marshalling area
     

 

Definitions

Timing        Couples to be dancing in time and on beat

 

Harmony   Couples dancing together and complimenting each other, harmoniously flowing with the music

                    Couples should also be seen to be enjoying themselves and having fun

 

Variety        A dance with a variety of moves showing interest, excitement and not excluding presentation and showmanship

KKBDC Rules
Rules and Regulations

 

  • Competitors must be checked in and receive their competitor number prior to the competition commencement.
     

  • Couples can be male/female, female/female or male/male. However, all couples MUST remain in their Lead/Follow roles throughout the event.
     

    • Same sex couples can dress as per their gender and enter any category as such.

    • The LEAD must wear the competitor number and remain in the lead role.

 

  • A couple is not permitted to dance more than two (2) arm lengths apart at anytime.  If a dancer encroaches on another competitors’ dance space and causes interference (blocking) a disqualification may occur at the discretion of the judges.  Dance etiquette will be upheld.
     

  • Competitors must enter the competition floor from the marshalling area. Finals will be called up to the floor from their seat

 

  • Competitors will be called to the marshalling area once only.  If the competitor doesn’t appear when called, they will be scratched from the event in keeping consistent with the running of the program and having respect for your fellow competitors
     

  • Competitors wishing to withdraw themselves from an event must notify the Floor Manager at least two (2) events prior to the event in which they are scheduled to compete.
     

  • Once withdrawn from an event a couple may NOT re-enter that event.
     

  • Competitors must remain on the floor at the end of each section until the M.C. announces “Dancers you may now leave the floor”.
     

  • Unless otherwise stated, there will be two (2) songs played for each event
     

  • All songs will be played in the style appropriate for the era of the category
     

  • The Professional status rule does not apply to this competition.  Both Amateurs and Professionals can dance in this competition

  • Competitors are limited to age categories (see below)

 

  • In submitting an entry for this event, competitors give permission for any photographic or video material taken to be used for promotion or sale by “Cooly Rocks On”, "Kooly Kat Dance Championships" and approved third parties.
     

  • Strictly NO products, eg powder, pepper, etc are to be applied to the floor or shoes at any time.

KKBDC Code of Conduct
Code of Conduct

 

  • Code of conduct towards competitors and spectators is expected to be in a "family orientated" manner
     

  • Any person(s) seen to be causing trouble or exhibiting inappropriate behaviour prior to or during the event will be asked to leave the venue
     

  • It is part of a condition of entry that competitors and spectators give permission for any photographic or video material taken at the event to be used for promotion or sale by the Kooly Kat Brisbane Dance Competition.

KKBDC Dress Code
Dress Code
  • 40s, 50s and 60s style of clothing must be worn in all dance sections, as appropriate for the competitor's style of dance
     
  • Competitors must wear traditional Rock and Roll, Rockabilly or Lindy Hop clothing suitable to the dress of the era and in accordance with the event they are competing in.
     

  • The dress code will be monitored at the marshalling area.
     

  • If the dress code is not adhered to competitors will not be permitted to enter the floor for that event. Partners do not have to wear matching outfits but must complement one another.
     

  • Competitors must wear their competition clothing when being presented with awards for placing.
     

Follows
  • The follows’ dress or skirt in all Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rockabilly events must cover the kneecap completely, i.e. the crease at the back of the kneecap will be seen covered by the outer dress/skirt length. This can be checked by kneeling on a chair and skirt must touch chair.
     

  • A Rockabilly follow must wear pencil skirt, full rock ‘n’ roll skirt or dress with petticoat or pedal pushers below the knee.
     

  • Swing and Lindy Hop follows are permitted to wear the clothing of the era, including high-waisted shorts and pants, playsuits and skirt/dress lengths both above and below the knee, as long as it is of appropriate styling for the era.
     

  • No stiletto heels are permitted in the venue.

KKBDC Age
Age

 

  • All competitors’ ages must fall within the guidelines. Full date of birth must be supplied on registration form.
     

  • Competitors must be of age for the events they have chosen on the day of competition Sunday 11th June 2017.
     

  • A 3-year waiver will apply to age sections Adult, Masters, Platinum and Golden, ie. – an Adult may dance up to Masters section as long as his/her partner is of age for that Masters section. The same Adult competitor may also dance with another partner in his/her age section. 

    This waiver will not apply to Junior/Adult sections. Junior competitors are only permitted to dance in the age category they are eligible for.
     

  • Competitors who do not meet the 3-year waiver and have nominated to an incorrect age category will automatically be re-allocated to the correct age category of the younger competitor and will be informed of this change.

 

  • Where age categories are already combined on the registration form, ie Adult/Masters or Platinum/Golden, competitors from each of the age categories will dance together and be judged together for that event, eg Adult/Masters will dance and be judged together on the floor in the same event.

 

  • Where age categories are listed separately on the registration form, however number of competitors requires organisers to combine age categories into one event on the day of competition, competitors may may be required to dance together on the floor but will be judged as per separate age categories.

This championship is only open to people that have registered to participate and have pre-purchased a Competitor Ticket by the advertised deadline.

 

 
Rock ‘n’ Roll (Lifts)

Two (2) Songs: one (1) fast & one (1) slow
 

  • Lifts, Drops, Props & Slides are permitted.

  • Minimum of 3 different lifts are required per song. "Throws" are not classified as "lifts".

  • Failure to meet these requirements will result in a mark down.

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+

 

 

Rock ‘n’ Roll (No Lifts)

Two (2) Songs: one (1) slow & one (1) fast

 

  • Props, drops and slides are permitted.

  • No Lindy Hop or Swing accepted.

  • One foot must remain on the floor at all times.

  • Failure to comply with this rule will result in mark down.

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+

 

 

Rock 'n' Roll (Traditional)

One (1) Song: medium/fast

 

  • Rock 'n Roll dance only.

  • Lifts, drops, props and slides are NOT permitted.

  • Footwork is only allowed to leave the floor during floor work such as shadow, mirror or in your general dance style.

  • Failure to comply with this rule will result in mark down.

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+


 

Rock 'n' Roll (4-step)

One (1) Song

 

  • Rock 'n Roll (4-step) dance only.

  • Lifts, drops, props and slides are NOT permitted.

  • Failure to comply with this rule will result in mark down.

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+

 

 

Rock ‘n’ Roll (Novice)

One (1) Song: medium/fast

 

  • This section is for 1st year dancers only. ie. both dancers must have less than 12 months dance experience each

  • Dance only. Lifts, drops, props and slides are NOT permitted

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+

 

 

Rockabilly

One (1) Song: fast (180bpm or more)

 

  • This is a dance only category.

  • No back step allowed at all.

  • The couple must dance in an anticlockwise direction.

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

  • Follows take note of the rules relating to Rockabilly skirts.

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+

 

Swing

Two (2) Songs: one (1) slow & one (1) medium

 

  • All styles of swing are permitted, including Triple Step, West Coast, East Coast, Hollywood and Swing Jive

  • Props and drops are permitted

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+

 

 

Lindy Hop

One (1) Song: medium to fast

 

  • Lifts are permitted.

  • Basic actions:  Jitterbug, Boogie and Lindy Hop with Linear movements, (4, 6 and 8 beats)

  • Dress Code must be appropriate to the era (Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code).

 

  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs - 44yrs

  • Senior            45yrs+


 

Triples (Open Age)

One (1) Song: medium

 

  • Lifts are permitted.

  • During performance each person in the Triples cannot be broken apart by more than 2 arms lengths from each other.

  • Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code.

 
  • Junior              Under 18 yrs

  • Adult              18yrs +

 

 

Girl/Girl (Open Age)

One (1) Song: medium/fast

 

  • All styles are permitted.

  • Lifts are permitted

  • Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code.

 

 

Boy/Boy (Open Age)

One (1) Song: medium/fast

 

  • All styles are permitted.

  • Lifts are permitted

  • Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code.

 

 

Novelty

 
Adult/Junior

(one (1) song – medium/fast)

 

  • All styles are permitted.

  • Younger partner must be under 18yrs, ie Junior.

  • There must be a minimum of 15yrs age difference between the two partners.

  • Competitor attire must adhere to the Dress Code.
